“Drive by Orchestra” and the Weird, Loud Cars

About this Comic

Have you ever heard those cars drive by in the middle of the night with their music blaring? The really annoying ones that are gone in a flash before you can get properly annoyed at them? I encountered a weird one several months ago that sounded like an orchestra. They vanished before I opened my window. However, I kept thinking about what I might have seen. So, I made this short funny comic to try and depict what I might have seen.

I originally made this comic traditionally for my Instagram, but recently I decided to make it a digital comic. With that, I added some effects and finally some color! I like working with a limited color palette because I find it less intimidating it really helps me flex my artistic muscles. Also with digital I could add action lines without permanently screwing up my line art and having to start all over.

The other effect I added was the “clouding” around the music notes. Without it it made the music notes hang awkwardly in the air like physical objects, rather than a sound effect. So, the clouding is there to give that “dialogue bubble” effect without an actual dialogue bubble taking up awkward space. Plus, because the clouding around the notes is more noticeable as its own entity on the thumbnail, it draws more focus to the sound effect, which makes the orchestra seem louder.

Anyway…

Now that the winter has come the cars that drive by are becoming less frequent, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever encounter the drive by orchestra again. I won’t miss them, but I’m confident they are out there somewhere. Hopefully getting their practice sessions in before the winter recital.

I hope you liked this small comic. If you are interested in future comics, art, and other media-related blogs, you can enter in your email below to get notified every time I make a new post!
